Family Literacy Day® 2017
20th January 2017
Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
"By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities, parents are actively keeping their own skills sharp while at the same time strengthening the relationship between the family which, in turn, encourages lifelong learning." *
There's so much more to learning than the three R's! Here are some ways to celebrate literacy this week, and every week:
Help your little ones learn to read with First Reading which is part of the comprehensive award-winning Usborne Reading Programme. Or, snuggle up and read aloud from baby's bedtime stories or perhaps one of the literary classics.
Younger children can learn early pen control and basic writing skills and older children will love to write their own stories.
What about math? There's loads of fun learning first numbers and sums and playing puzzle and games to sharpen the skills.
Are you curious how computers work? Or excited to learn some coding? It's all a few keystrokes away!
- Cooking and Baking
Find out about measurements, temperatures and creative display by learning to cook!
- Arts, Crafts and Hobbies
Discover thousands of things to make and do, create amazing mosaics, colour and doodle, become a fashion designer, build a robot or simply scribble on a pad. There are endless of creative ideas from Usborne. Colour by numbers, anyone?
- Games and Puzzles
It's family game night! Why not play some card games, or maybe some chess? It's always fun to work on a jigsaw together, challenge each other to trivia quizzes or follow a maze or two!
- Music and Dance
Listen to delightful music, learn to play the piano or guitar. Be sure to encourage the ballerina in your house.
- Gardening and Nature
Spending time outdoors, taking care of our world, planting a garden, or simply enjoying the night sky together are all perfect for family time!
- Sports and Games
Get out there and move! Take a bike ride together, learn to play soccer, go swimming or ride a horse! Maybe there is a future Olympian in your home.
Or... why not book an online or in-home Usborne party and double up on free books!
